On Sat 24 May, Beirut-based choreographer and dancer Ali Chahrour presents The Love Behind My Eyes, a powerful and heart-rending exploration of forbidden love staged in partnership with Shubbak Festival 2025 at Lowry.
Cast in evocative darkness and set to a rich, melancholy score, The Love Behind My Eyes draws inspiration from the tragic story of Mohamed Bin Daoud, a revered Iraqi jurist and scholar whose all-consuming devotion to a young man left him wracked with grief and led to his devastating demise.
Drawing on the rich traditions of Arabic lyrical poetry and the political and religious tumult of his heritage, Chahrour’s new work sees two talented performers transport audiences on a mesmerising journey through desire and yearning, as the souls of two lovers entwine and perish with eyes locked upon one another, embracing the mutual gaze of unconditional adoration that once gave them life.
Billed as a breathtaking meditation on loss, longing and the fatal cost of love that transcends Western conventions, this achingly poignant dance production is the latest in Chahrour’s critically acclaimed series on love following performances at Avignon Festival and major international stages.
